Sounds like you have a bad window regulator. I hear it's a common problem,
but my '97 is still going strong (knock on wood). New regulators are not
cheap.

It's actually the top edge of the door rubbing against the fuzzy
weatherstipping. The only fix I know of is to go to the dealer and ask for
isolation tape (sorry, don't have part # on me right now). It's about $5 for
the roll and will do all four doors. It's not the best way to fix the
problem, since the tape comes off after about a year, but it works.
