LA Lakers (11-1) at Boston (7-6) 7:00 pm EST
The Los Angeles Lakers look to rebound from their first loss
of the season when they face their 1980's nemesis, the surging
Boston Celtics.
Los Angeles had its best start ever come to an end against
former coach Pat Riley and the Heat with a 103-86 loss in
Miami on Tuesday. The Lakers became the last team to lose
this season but were unable to notch the best start of the campaign,
having matched the Atlanta Hawks' 11 consecutive wins to open
the season.
Tuesday's loss, which opened a three-game road trip, could be
partly blamed on the absence of injured superstar center Shaquille
O'Neal. The Lakers learned last week that O'Neal would be out
for at least 10 days due to an abdominal strain.
Elden Campbell started at center in place of O'Neal and finished
with 17 points and seven boards, but the tandem of starting
forwards were unable to produce. Rick Fox had just two points
and two rebounds while committing four turnovers and Robert
Horry contributed eight points, seven boards and four blocks.
The Celtics moved over .500 with Sunday's 90-86 win over the
Pistons. It was their sixth victory in the last seven games and their
fourth in a row at home.
Antoine Walker has been dominating defenses in his sophomore
season with Boston. He is averaging 21.2 points per game,
including nearly 25 per contest over the last three, and 10.1
boards for the season.
The Lakers have won three of the last four meetings between
the teams.
Series History:
- -----------------------------------------------
The Celtics and Lakers split their two meetings last season and
have split their last 12 encounters...
all-time, Boston is 73-36 at home, 46-64 away and
143-105 overall.
LAST GAME:
- -------------------------------------------------
Boston edged the Detroit Pistons 90-86 in the FleetCenter (11/23)...
Boston outlasted the visiting Pistons in a game which featured 8 ties
and 10 lead changes... Detroit held the rebounding advantage 41-37
and out-shot the Green 41% (29-70) to 40% (34-85), but the
Pistons turned the ball over 24 times leading to 28 Boston points...
Antoine Walker posted a game-high 29 points and Ron Mercer
added 16 for Boston... Grant Hill led Detroit with 21 points and a
game-high 11 rebounds.
BOSTON PROBABLE STARTERS:
- ------------------------------------------------------------
Forward Antoine Walker
Celtics leader in scoring with 21.2 ppg. and
rebounding with 10.1 rpg.
Forward Walter McCarty
Averaging 10.9 ppg. and 30 minutes per game
Center Travis Knight
Team's leading shot blocker (20) and 2nd
leading rebounder with 6.8 rpg.
Guard Ron Mercer
Team's 2nd leading scorer with 12.6 ppg
Guard Chauncey Billups
Rookie point-guard is averaging 10 ppg. and
has started last 11 games.
LAKERS' PROBALE STARTERS
- ------------------------------------------
ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Nick Van Exel (season-
high 11 assists vs. Clippers); Shooting guard Eddie Jones
(shooting 55.6 percent from the field); Small forward Rick Fox
(54.5 percent shooting vs. Clippers); Power forward
Robert Horry (played 21 minutes in return from injury);
Center Elden Campbell (5-for-9 from the field vs. Clippers).
Bench -- Guard Kobe Bryant (scored 24 points in 29 reserve
minutes against the Clippers); Forward Corie Blount
(shooting 77 percent from the field on the season); Center Sean
Rooks (moved up to backup center due to Shaq's injury
absence and scored 15 points with eight boards and three
blocks vs. the Clippers).
.
Wednesday at Boston -- Robert Horry vs. Antoine Walker.
Walker is possibly one of the league's rising stars. Horry's
sore left hamstring might tighten on the long flight to Miami.
He returned Sunday after a two-game injury absence and was
not as productive as usual -- with just one assist and two points
- -- although he did get eight rebounds and three steals.
