<H2>You oughta quit being a jerk, Scottie</H2>

<STRONG>By Ray Buck
<BR>CBS SportsLine National Columnist
<BR>Nov. 24, 1997</STRONG>

<P>There's no quit in Scottie Pippen.

<P>Just as there's no sand in Baghdad . . . no raisins in Kellogg's Raisin
Bran . . . no ego whatsoever about Steve Spurrier.

<P><STRONG>YOU KNOW PIPPEN. HE ONLY KNOWS</STRONG> the word "quit" when the first thing comes
along that doesn't suit his fancy. Then he checks himself into long-term
parking.

<font size=2><strong>Scottie Pippen fights back the only way he knows how, by sitting down and blending into the background.</strong><font size=-3> (AP)</font>

</td>
</tr>
</table>

<P>In other words, Scottie Pippen fights back the only way he knows how -- he
sits down and becomes part of the furniture -- and for that, we have a nice,
cool seat for him in the CBS SportsLine Whine Cellar.

<P>"I ain't coming back. I want to be traded," Pippen told a Chicago newspaper
Sunday. "I want to go to Phoenix or L.A."

<P>Well, Bulls GM Jerry Krause ought to accommodate his recalcitrant forward
and ship him off to the Clippers.

<P>You know the story of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the currently
5-out-the-last-7 NBA champion Chicago Bulls. Jordan is Batman, Pippen is
Robin. And Robin needs a ton of stroking . . . or in this case, a ton of
money.

<P>Pippen has a contract but that doesn't matter to a quitter.

<P><STRONG>HE'S IN THE FINAL YEAR</STRONG> that pays him so embarrassingly little -- $2.775
million -- that he wants out, wants out now, and wants out now no matter how
many codes of ethics he tramples in the process.

<P>He hasn't played all season because of foot surgery. And now, he has made a
veiled threat to continue sitting out even when he gets "healthy," adding
that he may already be healthy, just to jab management.

<P>"I'm running, jumping, dunking," Pippen told the newspaper. "I like to do
it in front of Krause."

<P>Pippen is bitter because the Bulls have run out of room under the salary cap -- an NBA-high $65 million -- just when his needs are to be met. His $2.775
million is 8.4 percent of Jordan's $33.14 million and, even harder for
Pippen to swallow, 64 percent of Toni Kukoc's contract average (six-year,
$26 million).

<P>While the Bulls proved a few years ago that they can't win without Jordan,
there are those who feel that the Bulls can't win without Pippen, either.
Ex-LA Laker James Worthy, now a network TV analyst, was quoted recently as
saying, "Scottie, in my opinion, is the most valuable player on that team."

<P>But that might be more empathy than fact. Worthy spent an NBA career
overshadowed by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

<P><STRONG>THE BULLS HAVE INTERNAL</STRONG> problems. Dennis Rodman is bored, silly,
self-absorbed and still an emotional time bomb. Toni Kukoc is treated like
a $26-million outsider. Jordan and Pippen dislike Krause, and Krause isn't
one to work on becoming a more endearing human being to anyone -- media,
fans or players.

<P>So Pippen's sulking and reported trade demands only serve to exacerbate the
situation.

<P>The Bulls are 8-5 without Pippen. Actually, his expected return has been
targeted all along for Christmas or New Year's.

<P>A word of advice for Pippen: You've quit before, Scottie. There's no shock
value in what you're trying to pull now.
