I have been thinking about whether or not it is true that Pitino made
Ron slip to #6 in the draft..
Here is the first 6 picks and where they went, etc.
#1- Duncan- SA- given, he was the best in the draft
#2- Van Horn- PHI- had a pre-draft plan to trade to NJ.
#3- Billups- BOS- we needed a point guard, if we lost Wesley, we did. We
got our replacement
#4- Daniels- VAN- They needed a point guard or center, chose Daniels
over Battie, never needed a shooting guard, as they had Peeler
#5- Battie- DEN- needed a point guard or center. They would have chosen
Antonio Daniels had Vancouver taken Battie.
#6- Mercer- BOS- We select Ron Mercer :)
I have come to the conclusion that Boston did the right thing in taking
Billups at 3 because Denver would have taken either Billups or Daniels
at 5 and we would have missed out on a top 2 point guard at #6.
Tim Duncan was the number 1 pick before the last NCAA season started so
it came to no ones surprise that he was taken.
Keith Van Horn was part of a pre-draft package deal between the Sixers
and the Nets, so it was no surprise as to when he was picked at #2.
I dont think Ron slipped, but it was more a matter of getting what teams
needed here that made him slip, Ron will make teams pay in the future
unless the other players become as good as he surely will become.
