The easiest way to check the differences on the two styles is listening
to two albums of the same band: Pink Floyd's "The Piper At The Gates Of
Dawn" and "Atom Heart Mother". Their first album is full of frequency
and speed alterations in the vocals and all the kind of strange noises
that are related to psychodelic rock. Listen to the song "Interstellar
Overdrive": they spend a large portion of time doing all the kind of
strange noises they could do with that equipment. I once saw a PF video
(which had just two song) that had an enormous version of this song,
with Syd Barret scratching and slaping the strings of his guitar to
produce all those bizarre sounds. I think that psychodelic rock and acid
rock must be similar labels.
On the other hand, on the cow album Pink Floyd starts to experiment with
music creation, and not sound creation. The title track does a perfect
blending of classical and rock music, and also some funky grooves and
bluesy solos.
I like Pink Floyd from Atom Heart Mother to The Wall. Before that,
they're just too strange. After that, they're just too boring... "The
Final Cut" may have good lyrics, but musically it's the most boring
album I own...
