I'm not sure I understand:

You called your local Discount Tire, and they said they'd sell you 
four tires, they had in stock (no shipping) for $128/tire INCLUDING 
balancing, so $512 total?

Then you called their "headquarters" or something? And they told you 
that each tire is $90 for the tire, $6/tire for shipping, and $9 per 
tire to mount & balance. Which comes to roughly $105/tire?


In that case, what I guess you're saying is:

1. I get it local, and it costs me $512 total, or
2. I get it shipped, and it costs me $420 total,

a difference of $92?

If that's the case, perhaps I have an explanation. I read on one of 
these comparison websites that tire prices range quite considerably 
depending on where you live and what market you're buying in. 
Therefore, getting your tires mailorder (including shipping) may be 
less expensive than buying it from the SAME dealer locally.

Especially if it's a franchise, the end franchise owner may take 
their own cut, accounting for an additional cost buying locally.
