Wheel Alignments

I hope this will answer the wheel alignment questions. 

According to the VW Warranty  Policy and Procedures Manual revision 3/97
Article 1 page 6.

Heading Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance.

Alignment and balance will ONLY be accepted under warranty when the repair
is made during the PDI, and ONLY WITH PRIOR OTS AUTHORIZATION. Once the
vehicle has been delivered or put in use, alignment and balancing will not
be considered under the terms of the Limited New Vehicle Warranty, unless
in conjunction with a warrantable repair.

I remember seeing a TSB that mentioned the tires not mounted properly at
the factory. There a several colored stripes on the tires. We were told to
make sure all of the same colors were on the out side eg: yellow stripe.
This will be very difficult for you to check because after driving several
miles the stripes will disappear. 

If you think you car has an alignment problem don't wait. I hope that your
VW dealer is understanding and willing to help. The Service Manager can
make a call to his/her OTS and get approval. I would think that at or
around the 5000 service it should be covered.
