re: More on Baker, from Seattle, and it's not good

But if he's right (and I have come around to the conclusion that he is), does
it really matter that he's a hack and a career Baker-basher? He's still right.
Nah. You might be right, Mark Berry might be right, Joe might be right, DJessen might be right, but Frank Hughes can't be right. Because Frank Hughes overblows everything involving Vin Baker. He was the cause of Seattle's downfall according to Frank Hughes. Frank conveniently forgets Wally Walker, who gave Vin all that money (and who is more the fool, the fool who gives an enormous sum, or the fool who takes it?). And I'm not kidding, I've lived in the PNW and have read the Seattle papers: Hughes has only three topics: Gary Payton, Vin Baker and the Blazers (you've probably got to live in the PNW to understand the rivalry these two cities have for each other -- they talk about the other city's teams more than they talk about their own), and that hasn't changed even after Vinnie left.

Look, Hughes can't be right, because, frankly, he doesn't appear to analyze the situation any more than "Vinnie sucks". He's like the worst of the bashers here on the list, perhaps worse because he gets paid for writing -- writing that sucks. Some of the more reasonable bashers used to give reasons for why they felt Baker was underperforming; that's turned more into just perjorative name-calling. Frank Hughes has been doing that for years.

Anyway, I think the "coyotes" ' (perhaps not consciously realized) motive in
bashing Baker and rejoicing in the fact that the Boston media has now joined
the feast on the "gentle deer" (or is it moose? :>), is that such an outcry
will get the owners' attention and help remove Wallace, who is a much bigger
problem than Baker.

[..] But you
have to open your eyes. And remaining quiet about it isn't going to help.
The only way to change things is to turn up the heat. Like Kestas said, I'm
hoping all of this coming to a head and splashing all over the papers makes
it obvious to the new owners that Wallace has to go.
Wow. You guys give way too much credit to some sports email list. I think you guys think you're part of some sort of revolution, some sort of movement, and I gotta tell you, I don't see it.

[from: Kestas:]
Did you notice how every time he's
asked about Baker, his response is "we are where we were at this point last
year" (translation: the trade didn't screw up the team that badly, at least
playing-wise).
Yes, I have. I've also mentioned I've stopped caring what Chris Wallace and Leo Papile have to say. Y'all are very intelligent, why do you care what they say? You know they're going to spin it in the most glowing way possible, even if it makes them look foolish at times. I don't get it.

At this point I believe it would be worth missing the playoffs
if that's the cost of getting rid of Wallace (not to mention a shot at Lebron
and Milicic). Because otherwise at this time next year we'll be moaning about
how Wallace botched yet another draft, or made yet another mind-bogglingly
stupid trade.
I loathe this type of thinking (not to single you out, Kestas, but I just have a strong reaction to this). It's never better to miss the playoffs. Y'all accuse Wallace of not knowing what "championship-driven" means, then you come down on the side of tanking (well, maybe you didn't come right out and say tank the season, but rather Wallace leaving is worth missing the playoffs).

Ah, well, it's the same old same old around here. Same thing happened to Pitino. And the same thing probably will happen: Wallace will eventually resign/get fired, and there'll have to be another person to blame.
