RE: Today's game
Observations on the Charlotte game:
1) I'm not sure about Pierce's performance these last couple of games.
Some people say it's his back/tailbone bothering him, but he hit the few
good looks he got. I guess the backbone is keeping him from getting
where he needs to go. Even if he hadn't gotten hurt, he still would have
cooled off, because he doesn't get any easy shots, other than his foul
shots.
2) I think the last play of the game at Charlotte shows you why you need
one
of those fast, penetrating point guards like Jaamal Tinsley. Milt is
a strong, assertive player who can get into the lane and (sometimes) make
things happen. But he's not a big-play guy, and you need your
PG to make big plays. Milt plays well in the flow; he's a good backup.
I really hate to say this, but you know Kenny would have made that shot.
3) Sunday's game also highlighted for me the need for a player like Shane
Battier. I
'm convinced this guy is going to be a superb pro,
closer to a poor man's grant hill than a rich man's Rick Fox. When
I see the players running around, not knowing where everybody is,
when they should take a shot, etc. etc. it reminds me how low most
of the basketball IQs on this team are. Factoring out the idiotic over-
reliance on three point shots, you have a starting five that doesn't really
have much feel for the game besides Walker. Pierce is coming into his
own as a scorer, but his floor game isn't going to remind anybody of
John Havlicek -- yet. Blount is still learning to play. Palacio likewise
--
that's why I don't blame him for bricking those two free throws. He
probably hasn't had to shoot decisive free throws since college. Williams
is a good guy, and one of the dumbest players I've seen; he could be so
much better if he had any brains at all. Stith is a good, solid shooting
guard. Randy is a point guard by default because of his size. So that
leaves Antoine as the only person who knows how to pass the ball, and
even that's no good if guys aren't cutting, etc. A battier would help this
team a lot.
To sum up: we need Tinsley and Battier. A legit post-up guy/rebounder
wouldn't hurt, either. But
