He wasn't - Pierce was right there, but was being careful not to get
whistled for a foul, the way they were giving continuations tonight
(basically, if the Celtics' foul and the Sixers' subsequent score occurred
in the same quarter, the Sixers got continuation). But lately their knack
for giving up a score with the game on the line has been amazing. Tonight
they managed to do it twice in the space of 20 seconds or so. I don't know
if it's bad defense, bad luck, or both. Speaking of bad luck, we play a
nearly full-strength Phoenix tough and lose, then 2 days later Kidd breaks
his ankle. Run-of-the-mill players like Hoiberg, Peeler and McKie suddenly
turn into stars against us, real stars turn into superstars, and so it goes.
I fear that this third consecutive tough loss will break the players'
spirit and disabuse them of any illusions they had about making one last
run for the 8th spot, for the simple reason that they haven't been getting
rewarded for all their hard work with Ws and time is running out.
And I think we received more proof tonight that Potapenko will always
remain a backup try-hard (in terms of mentality). His 18 rebounds (among
other things) kept them in the game, and he can make 9 out of 10 shots when
it doesn't matter much, but when he has the opportunity to save the game
with a layup, he short-arms it into the rim support. It had "what am I
doing taking this shot?!" written all over it. Or maybe I'm reading too
much into it, maybe he just had tired legs from all that rebounding.
Frustrating...
