I fear that Joe is right. The Boston pantheon of True Heroes really
consists of Bird, Orr, Williams and maybe Yaz. We Celtics fans put Russ up
there too, but the general public might not. Why? See Joe's comments above.
And y'know what? I think Bird exhibited a lot of those "mannerisms" (Joe's
phrase) that we condemn or disapprove of in others, but was forgiven because
.... You fill in the rest.
About five years ago, Sports Illustrated had a photo of Bird, Williams
and Orr taken at some event. They posed the question of what other city
could claim three living players in three sports of equal stature? And add
in that Russ could have switched with Bird. Several letters followed in the
next few weeks with other cities making similar claims, but I forget some of
the "nominees."
Finally, as the latest flame war recedes, I see some newer names posting
here. Nice.
