Ironies and cheerleading
Quote1 from mustang:
"Geez Tom, as Danny Ainge said to Kevin McHale in the video "Season of the
Shooting Stars", "You stole my brain waves"! Don't give up though, maybe
it's just an N.B.A phase like the "everyone is on cocaine" period that
preceded the great era you're talking about. By the way, watch out for the
guys who will give you grief for daring to talk about the "good ole days"."
And watch out for someone who will give you grief if you dare to want change and
look toward the future. In the "good ole days", we had slavery too.
Quote 2 from mustang:
>"Thank you for your eloquence, Cecil. We're here because we love basketball
>in general and the Celtics in particular. This is a forum for opinions, not
>a pissing contest. Some people on this list seem to have had too much
>caffeine. These people are fellow fans, I respect what they have to say,
>indeed i'm trying to solicit their opinions. That's why I do this. However,
>let me state for the record that I am a fan of the current team as well as
>being into the much maligned "traditionalist" wing of Celtic fandom. I live
>in the 90's . I can understand younger fans not appreciating the history of
>the team, they weren't part of it, and when it's discussed they feel left
>out, but the vitriol I just don't get. All of a sudden I'm a "lame head"
>etc and I need impotence medicine. Ahh, I'm not going to dignify that.
>
>Celtic fans unite! Keep talking and don't take it personally if someone
>disagrees with you.( Besides, my wife thought it was funny!)"
Oh, so you're the good guy who didn't start the vitriol. Didn't you say,"
Jeff, Jeff, Jeff... would it be rude of me to ask how old you are? Thanks.
You may choose (a) not to reply, (b) reply to me in person, or (c) reply to
the list. No problem." in the very beginning? I guess you really don't
understand yourself. Just because someone want's change that won't even hurt
the team (cheerleaders), doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate history. You're
wife has a better sense of humor than you. Oh, and I don't think you are part
of any celtic history unless your jersey is hanging on the rafters.
Quote3 from mustang:
>"This is a celtics mailing list. I assume that people want to see the team
>rejoin the winning echelons of the N.B.A. Nobody is "crying " here, but
>history is history. Should we just forget about it? History is what makes
>the Celtics unique and the truth is that we have never needed cheerleaders
>to win 16 titles. Why do we need them now? All the cheerleaders in the
>world are not going to put the ball in the hole or play defense. Let's
>stick to discussions about what will help the team win . That's what we
>are all here for isn't it? This isn't the "I like T&A" mailing list. Or
>the "impotence" list either."
When I spend 50$ to get 1 ticket, I want to be entertained not only by
basketball, but by good half-time shows and cheerleaders. They wouldn't cost
1/100th of what Walker is asking. It would also give some women jobs.
Quote4 from mustang:
"Did you hear the word moral in my post ? There is nothing puritanical about
>my objection to cheerleaders. You're missing the point. The game is the
>thing. Why do we have to have the same tired kitschy-koo schtick as the
>rest of the league?"
The game is the thing, but I would like to see some extras for the high ticket
prices they charge.
Quote5 from mustang:
"Thank you Dan! So far,the great majority on the list agrees with me on
this subject, which is gratifying. Pitino gave a lot of lip service to
Celtic tradition as the reason he took on the job, now let's see him back
it up. We've
had 16 titles, no dumb mascots or "lame head" cheerleaders in 50 years
here. Hell, even the Red Sox had "Wally the Green Monster" booed off the
field never to return, and they haven't won in 80 odd years. If I want to
see beautiful women running around acting like brainless refugees from high
school I'll tune into "Baywatch". Bostonians know how to cheer and when to
cheer, they don't need to be "led". Cheerleaders aren't going to make the
product on the floor better, the're like the Emperor's new clothes, and
real fans are not going to be placated by them. Save the money for Antoine
or something that will really fill the seats, WINNING!"
Saying the majority agrees with you is a bold statement. You're right that
cheerleaders won't make the team better...Antoine will keep forcing shots no
matter what, but cheerleaders definitely won't hurt the team, will help get new
fans, will help the economy, and will cost next to nothing compared to how much
just AW will be making.
With a name like "mustang", I would think that would imply that someone is wild
and free spirited, but hey it's your name. So since you relish the celtic
history that YOU were part of you should take your kids to see the C's, but have
the janitors take off the no-smoking signs and turn off the AC because they
can't experience celtic "history" without gagging in second-hand smoke and
sweating their asses off. And quit trying to kiss up to everyone on the list
that agrees with you. Go celtic cheerleaders.
