Rick Pitino said the rivalry between he and Calipari is a figment of the
press's imagination, that the game is the players, not the coaches. The
two are the best of friends, so why is this rivalry becoming an issue?
They just happened to play back to back games against each other, that
doesn't make a rivalry. I'm certain, as friends, it makes for some
joking between the two of them when they get together, but New Jersey
has hardly been a big rival of the Celtics, no matter what team has been
playing. The two big rivals over the years have been Philly and Lakers.
I guess seeing a rivalry based on the fact that they're both former
college coaches and friends to boot gives the press something to write
about. Let's not take it too seriously and add credence to their
daydreaming.
