It has nothing to do with how well he would come across on TV. It's
from his career with the Pistons. If you go back to the '80s with the
Celts, you'll remember that Detroit was a bitter rival. Thomas had the
media dazzled with his smile, but on the court he was as much of a jerk
as Laimbeer. An incident comes to mind where Thomas was fouled by Ainge
and after the whistle, Thomas drilled him in the back of the head with
the ball from close range. Nothing big ever came of it, but imagine if
the roles had been reversed. From that point on, Thomas was on my list,
and his disparaging comments about Bird after the '87 playoffs simply
confirmed why.
