While I understand the "play Billups and let him work
through his mistakes" theory, I also understand Pitino's
frustration. It doesn't sound like it's just a matter of
putting up with bad shots or turnovers. It's Billups' whole
offensive approach. Pitino wants a fast pace, even in
half-court sets, and Billups hasn't adjusted to that. You
can't sacrifice everything you're trying to do just to
soothe Billups and bring him along. If the rest of the team
is ready to play that kind of up-tempo game, you have to put
the best point guard out there to do it.
Now, I'm not saying give Billups away, but the truth is he
is one of our most valuable assets. If he isn't going to
adjust to the faster system, then, yes, trade him for equal
value. If Pitino believes it's just a matter of time before
he gets it, then hold onto him and play him limited minutes
until he catches up.
Anyone who watches this team can tell it needs a good point
guard. If Billups is going to be that guy, great. We know
Edney and Barros are not long-term answers (or even
short-term). But if Billups isn't, then get someone who is.
I loved the Steve Nash rumor. He is an exciting young
player, who fits with the youth movement, but already knows
how to run a team or find his own offense. If we could get
him, I say do it.
