   (CHICAGO-BOSTON)

(ADDING INFORMATION, QUOTES)

BOSTON 92, CHICAGO 85
- ---------------------

Rick Pitino made a stunning return to NBA coaching as his
fast-break offense and pressure defense led the Boston Celtics
to a 92-85 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who blew a 20-point
lead and looked nothing like the defending champions.

Antoine Walker scored 31 points for the Celtics, who beat the
Bulls for the first time in 12 meetings. Boston was 15-67 last
season, while Chicago was 69-13 and won its fifth championship
in seven years.

"I'm really proud of our ballclub," said Pitino, who spent the
last eight seasons at the University of Kentucky before signing
a 10-year, $68 million contract as Celtics coach and president.
"This could have turned into a devastating loss for us. I
thought we really relaxed as the game wore on."

"The Celtics made a great run on us in the last two quarters,"
Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "They showed that they are a
great-conditioned ballclub and we're a poorly conditioned one.
That was the energy they had tonight. They outhustled us for a
lot of the rebounds and that's how they got a lot of their
second-chance points."

The Celtics, who trailed 32-12 after one quarter, erased a 43-34
halftime deficit with a huge third quarter behind Walker. His
three-pointer from the left baseline with 6:31 remaining gave
Boston the lead for good at 52-49.

"We did the job defensively and that's what we are going to
need, night in and night out," Walker said. "Defense has got to
win games for us."

Walter McCarty, one of three Celtics who played for Pitino at
Kentucky, hit a 10-footer, giving the Celtics their first lead
at 49-47 with 7:15 left in the third quarter. The shot capped a
15-4 spurt to open the period.

The Celtics outscored the Bulls 34-15 in the period and took a
68-58 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bulls closed to 86-84
with 1:21 left on an 11-3 spurt highlighted by eight points by
Michael Jordan and a three-pointer from Steve Kerr.

But Jordan twice split a pair of free throws to thwart any ideas
of a comeback. Boston scored six of the last eight points to
ice it.

"This sets the tone for us, we know we can compete night in and
night out," said Walker, a Chicago native.

"Our comeback was good but it was abbreviated," Jackson said.
"They did a good job of holding the lead and not making mistakes
towards the end of the game."

Walker shot 13-of-26 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.
Rookie guard Chauncey Billups added 15 points and four assists
and Travis Knight pulled down 13 rebounds for Boston.

Jordan scored 30 points for the Bulls, who were without injured
All-Star forward Scottie Pippen. Jordan shot a dismal 7-of-23
from the field and made 16-of-21 free throws. Jason Caffey
added 13 points for Chicago.

"We kind of lost our rhythm after the first quarter," Jordan
said. "They maintained their defensive pressure. We applied
pressure in the first quarter they couldn't handle, but I think
the difference in the ballgame came in the second half with our
turnovers. We had 17 and they had six.

Dennis Rodman had nine rebounds for the Bulls, who were just
1-of-8 on three-pointers and were outrebounded, 52-41.

Chicago was beaten in a season opener for the first time since
1990, when it lost to Philadelphia.

"I think our team deserves a lot of credit beating the world
champions, granted without one of their best players," Pitino
said. "I thought we could come back because we got very lucky
in cutting their lead in the second quarter."
