THE TRADE
Let me get this straight. the Mavs get: Shawn Bradley, Robert Pack,
Ed O'Bannon and Khalid Reeves -- none of whom would get meaningful
minutes on a .500 team. The Mavs give up: All-Star (and deservedly so)
Chris Gatling -- the one good move the Mavs front office has made in 5
years. Sam Cassell -- a decent point guard (if no Jason Kidd), with two
rings. George McCloud -- a 3 with good range who's resurrected his
career in Dallas and made Mashburn expendable. Jim Jackson, who only a
couple of years ago was regarded as a franchise player. And Montross --
well, let's leave it at that.
Can we please retire Don Nelson's number again? Or maybe let Duncan
wear #19 as a tribute to the man who's doing his best to bring him to
Boston? Maybe we've been too hard on Gaston & Co -- there hasn't been a
double agent this effective since the Lakers planted Ted Stepien in
Cleveland. I know I sound like I'm being facetious, but the only other
explanations for this trade are (a) Nelson is certifiably insane or (b)
he is truly, madly and deeply in love with Shawn Bradley. If (b) is the
correct answer, maybe Nellie and Shawn can double with Dan Reeves and
Tommy Maddox when what's left of the Mavs visit Atlanta.
This is a great day for New Jersey. It may be a greater day for Boston.
HALLELUJAH!!!!!
